This time I’m introducing Atami Osakana Daishokudo in Atami, Shizuoka!

What is Atami Osakana Daishokudo? The “new Atami landmark” with never-ending lines

Past the shopping street in front of Atami Station, a large wooden signboard catches your eye.
That is the entrance of Atami Osakana Daishokudo.
With bold lettering reminiscent of a fishing boat and a dynamic wave illustration, the sign is a true food attraction!
Posters of seasonal menus and the signature “Kinmedai” (splendid alfonsino) line the door, and before you even go in you can’t stop wondering what to eat!
Location and access of Atami Osakana Daishokudo
The address is Atami Uoriki Building 2F, 3-1 Tawaramoto-cho, Atami, Shizuoka 413-0011.
It’s superbly accessible, about a 3-minute walk from Atami Station, just past the Heiwa-dori shopping street.
There is no dedicated parking lot, so if you come by car, use a nearby coin parking lot, or visit by train for a smoother trip.
Does Atami Osakana Daishokudo have its own parking lot?
To get straight to the point, unfortunately Atami Osakana Daishokudo has no dedicated parking lot.
The restaurant is in a great location, a 3-minute walk from Atami Station and very close to the Heiwa-dori shopping street, so if you come by car you’ll need to use coin parking lots in the area.

Roads around Atami Station are often narrow and parking fees tend to be high! If you have time, I strongly recommend parking a little farther away and strolling through Atami’s streets to the restaurant, or simply taking the train!
[Latest] Crowds and how to wait smartly: the system explained

“Atami Osakana Daishokudo” is a super popular restaurant that always has people waiting!!
So the key is how quickly you can get a “numbered ticket.”
Already 19 groups and a 1-hour wait shortly after 10:00
This is the order reception and ticket machine (matoca) at the storefront.
On the day I visited, a Saturday, there were already “19 groups waiting” shortly after 10:00 a.m., one hour before opening, a surprising number that meant about a 40-minute wait.
Get a numbered ticket using “matoca”
First, get your numbered ticket from this machine.
With this much of a crowd first thing in the morning, lunchtime is sure to be even busier.
Numbered tickets start being issued at 10:00, so the first step is to arrive in Atami early.
That said, it’s hard to control when you’ll get in, so the “smart way to wait” seems to be either skipping breakfast and going all in, or checking the ticket machine’s status frequently and predicting the best lunchtime slot to take a ticket.
As a guide, with 19 groups waiting, we were called at around 11:40 after opening.
If you want to eat lunch during the 12:00-13:00 golden time, aim to take a ticket while the count is around the “30s” in the 10:00 hour and the timing should work out well.

If you scan the QR code on your ticket, you can see the current call status in real time in the LINE app!!

By the way, it’s fine to leave the restaurant! You’ll get a LINE notification, so stroll the shopping street while you wait!
Their unique “group calls” and ordering rules

This is an interesting point unique to “Osakana Shokudo” that’s a little different from a typical restaurant. Learn the flow in advance so you can get in smoothly!
When your turn comes, you move to the front of the restaurant on the 2nd floor. Rather than being seated one group at a time, about 10 groups are shown in all at once. *With large parties, the number of groups naturally goes down.
Each group is handed a menu like the one in the photo, and the staff cheerfully introduce the day’s recommendations and limited menus.
When the introduction ends, orders and payment are taken first, in ascending order of ticket number.
I had decided from the start: the signature Seafood Teppen Don!!

Since you pay first, once you’re seated all that’s left is to wait for your food! Listen to the menu introduction while deciding your order in your head.
Tasting report! The signature “Seafood Teppen Don” was overwhelming

Inside, the décor is like a modernized fishermen’s hut, with decorations reminiscent of big-catch flags and cute fish ornaments hanging from the ceiling, so just sitting there is exciting!
Every so often you can hear the staff’s spirited shout of “Hai, Atamiiii!”

After waiting about 5 minutes, the “Seafood Teppen Don” arrived!!!
The tower of seafood piled high enough to spill over the bowl is impressive, but it’s actually designed so that even women can easily finish it.
The amount of rice is just right: despite appearances, it’s not too much and feels refined.
The fish soup (aragiru) I ordered separately also looks like it has plenty of fish flavor! This is definitely going to be delicious.

Truly a seafood tower worthy of the name “Teppen” (summit)!
The tower of seafood piled so high it nearly spills out of the bowl is simply impressive.
Colorful local fish cut into chunks, like tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, are heaped on without restraint, and on top sparkle ikura (salmon roe) like jewels!
I’m torn about where to start with my chopsticks.

The real value of this bowl lies in changing the flavor with the condiments on the table.
First, as is, pair it with wasabi and the “Sashimi soy sauce,” which brings out the sweetness of the sashimi.
Partway through, drizzle on the “Rich savory sesame sauce” and the flavor instantly turns deep and rich!

The tuna, salmon, and sea bream were all so fresh their edges were crisp, and with every bite the fish’s natural springy texture and the sweetness of its fat burst in my mouth!!
It’s way tastier than what you get in Tokyo.
When you mix in the “Rich savory sesame sauce” midway, the rich sauce clings thickly to the firm sashimi, giving a deep, mellow texture completely different from soy sauce.

Finally, pouring on the piping hot, rich seafood broth gives the fish a rare, flaky tenderness, and the harmony with the broth where the umami melts out is the best!!
Thank you for the meal.
Lunch budget at Atami Osakana Daishokudo
Here’s the lunch budget at Atami Osakana Daishokudo that you’re curious about.
My actual bill was ¥2,838 for the Seafood Teppen Don including tax, plus ¥550 including tax for the limited-time Izu Hokkori Shunchou Set of clam soup and Gurincha tea, for a total of ¥3,388!!
Counting one seafood bowl and one bowl of fish soup, it’s good to budget ¥3,000 to ¥4,000.

When I left it was just before 13:00, and the number of groups waiting was a startling 59.
Whatever you do, head to the restaurant early and make getting a numbered ticket your top priority!!
