From Naha Airport to Churaumi Aquarium: First, Check the Access

From Naha Airport to Churaumi Aquarium takes about 2 hours by car using the expressway.
It’s in Motobu Town in northern mainland Okinawa, so it’s farther than I had imagined.
After getting off the expressway, there are Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium guide signs here and there along the road, so I almost never got lost.
If you go by bus from Naha Airport, the standard is to use an express bus (such as the Yanbaru Express Bus or the Okinawa Airport Shuttle), but the time needed is a rather long 2.5 to 3 hours.
That’s a difference of nearly 1 hour compared with a car, so I recommend a rental car for anyone who wants to use their time well. If you take the bus, it’s reassuring to check the latest timetables and service suspension information on the operator’s official site in advance.
Arriving at Ocean Expo Park! First, Check the Overall Map (Estimated time: 5 min)

Churaumi Aquarium isn’t a standalone building; it’s one of the facilities inside a vast park called “Ocean Expo Park.”
In front of the North Gate parking lot (P7) there’s a park-wide guide map and a hours notice, so checking the overall picture here first helps you move smoothly. The parking lot is free too, which is nice.
Looking at the map, you can see that besides the aquarium itself, there are many highlights outdoors too, such as “Okichan Theater,” where the dolphin show takes place, the Sea Turtle Pavilion, and the Manatee Pavilion.
In fact, this outdoor area alone is substantial enough to take 30 minutes to nearly 1 hour if you want to see it properly.
The Area in Front of the Aquarium Is a Treasure Trove of Photo Spots (Estimated time: 10 min)

On the way to the aquarium building, photo spots are scattered about that make you want to take pictures. The first thing I noticed was the monument of a dolphin jumping through a hoop. Against the blue sky, it was a dynamic piece that looked ready to leap out at any moment.

Going further, you see an entrance with the words “Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium” on a stone wall, one that makes you feel “we made it!” It’s surrounded by flower beds, and I saw many people taking commemorative photos here.

And what stands out most in the plaza in front of the aquarium is this giant bronze whale shark statue. It’s about the same scale as the real thing, and looking up from below, it’s more impressive than I imagined. This is also a classic spot you can’t skip if you’re taking photos of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.
Outdoor Program Before Entering (1): The Dolphin Show (Estimated time: 30 min)

Before going into the aquarium building, be sure to check out the dolphin show at “Okichan Theater.”
It’s in a free area, so you can watch it without entering the aquarium.

There’s also a list of show times nearby.
The dolphin show is held 5 times a day, at 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00, and each show is about 15 minutes.
The show you can catch depends on what time you arrive, so I recommend checking in advance.

When the show actually started, the sight of dolphins jumping high against the blue sky was spectacular!
The seating is bowl-shaped, so it’s nice that you can see well from any position.

At the theater’s pool you can also watch mealtime for the big, stocky dolphins!!

You can also see them gliding through the water up close. The sight of them swimming with just half a face above the water was so cute that I couldn’t help watching.

In the show’s finale, two dolphins performed a perfectly synchronized jump.
At the trainer’s call, they leapt to exactly the same height, and cheers rose naturally from the audience!!
I’m very satisfied that this is free!!
Outdoor Program Before Entering (2): The Sea Turtle Pavilion and Manatee Pavilion (Estimated time: 20 min)

A short walk from the dolphin show venue is the Sea Turtle Pavilion. Peering in from above, I could see sea turtles swimming leisurely around the big tank.

There’s also a spot where you can see sea turtles up close from underwater, and I could closely observe the big shells and the powerful movement of their flippers. They’re bigger than I’d imagined and impressive.

The Sea Turtle Pavilion has viewing windows like an underwater tunnel.
Change the angle and you’ll meet sea turtles with a different look.
I realized that even the outdoor area alone takes surprisingly long if you look carefully.

Next I visited the “Manatee Pavilion.”
A cute-looking building whose roof is decorated with a manatee and sea turtle mosaic art.

Inside, I saw manatees munching on lettuce-like vegetables.
With their slow movements and round bodies, they have a loveable charm that makes you want to keep watching.

Sometimes they came right up close, and the expression of one holding a vegetable in its mouth and looking at us was very cute.
Entering the Building! Checking Churaumi Aquarium’s Admission Fees

After thoroughly enjoying the outdoor area, it’s finally on to the main building.
The entrance has a high ceiling and an open feel.

Admission is ¥2,180 for adults, ¥1,440 for middle (high school students), ¥710 for children (elementary and junior high school students), and free for under 6.
There’s also an annual passport that lets you enter any number of times for a year at the price of two visits, so it’s worth considering if you plan to visit Okinawa many times.

The ticket machines are automated, and I could buy a ticket smoothly.
It supports not only cash but also cashless payment such as electronic money, so you can feel at ease.
Incidentally, if you want to enter a bit cheaper than the regular price, you can use advance tickets from convenience stores, discount tickets sold at “Michi-no-Eki Kyoda,” web tickets from travel agencies, and so on.
If you buy in advance through KKday or similar, you can also enter smoothly without lining up on the day, which is a plus, so I recommend it.
The Coral Sea to the Colorful Tropical Fish Area (Estimated time: 10 min)

The first thing you encounter after entering is the “Coral Sea.” When I visited, a “Coral Breeding Exhibition” was also being held, with an exhibit where you can learn about the ecology of coral. In front of the big window, many people stopped to look closely.

In the tank, colorful tropical fish swam freely among the coral.
At feeding time in the Tropical Fish Sea, the fish crowded together, and the sight of vivid blue, orange, and yellow fish swimming is so beautiful you can’t help taking photos!! ☺
The Kuroshio Sea to the Impressive Whale Shark! (Estimated time: 20–30 min)

When it comes to the highlight of Churaumi Aquarium, it’s this “Kuroshio Sea” after all. In this huge tank, boasting one of the world’s largest, you can see whale sharks and reef manta rays swimming leisurely. People were always gathered in front of the tank, all holding up phones and cameras at once.

Up close, the size of the whale shark amazes you all over again. Seeing the difference in scale from the reef manta rays and countless fish swimming around, I lost track of time gazing blankly.

In fact, you can only see the whale shark standing vertically to the water surface at the moment it eats.
Feeding times are twice daily, at 15:00 and 17:00. I was lucky enough to be there at that timing and saw it open its big mouth and suck in the food all at once.

The feeding scene seen up close is more dynamic than imagined.
The surrounding fish crowd around the food together, so the whole tank was an overwhelming sight overflowing with creatures.
Souvenirs Are Part of the Fun! The Museum Goods Shop

After the tour, I also stopped by the museum goods shop inside. Plush toys modeled on whale sharks, manta rays, manatees, and more were lined up in rows, with a selection so wide that I couldn’t decide which to pick.
Check the Return Shuttle Bus Too

On the way back to the parking lot, I saw a wrapped bus with whale sharks and manta rays on it. It runs as an in-park shuttle bus, and its design, with attention to every detail, made me stop and look.
One Last Commemorative Photo with the Symbolic Whale Shark Statue

On the way out, passing through the plaza in front of the aquarium, the bronze whale shark statue I’d seen on the way in greeted me again. Seen in the light of a different time of day than the morning, it gave a different impression, and I took one more photo and left Churaumi Aquarium.
[By Course] Time Needed at Churaumi Aquarium: Summary
What I felt after actually visiting is that seeing both the “outdoor area” and the “indoor area” properly takes quite a lot of time. I’ve divided it into three courses according to your purpose.
Digest Course: Enjoy Only the Kuroshio Sea (Time needed: about 1 hour)
A time-first course where you skip the outdoor programs and, once inside, look only at the whale shark in the “Kuroshio Sea.” You can go through in about 1 hour from entry to exit. It’s easy to fit in even on a day with a packed schedule.
Standard Course: See the Interior Once Through (Time needed: about 2 hours)
A course that sees the main exhibits inside, from the Coral Sea to the Kuroshio Sea. Many tourists seem to tour in about this much time, and adjusting your time to match the whale shark feeding time raises satisfaction further.
Thorough Course: Fully Enjoy the Dolphin Show, Sea Turtles, and Manatees Too (Time needed: about 3 hours to half a day)
A course that sees everything including the outdoor dolphin show, the Sea Turtle Pavilion, and the Manatee Pavilion, and tours the interior at a leisurely pace. If you want to enjoy everything introduced in this article, allowing 3 hours to half a day will keep you safe.
| Area | Estimated time |
|---|---|
| Checking the Ocean Expo Park overall map | 5 min |
| Photo spots in front of the aquarium | 10 min |
| Dolphin show (Okichan Theater) | 30 min |
| Sea Turtle Pavilion and Manatee Pavilion | 20 min |
| Coral Sea | 10 min |
| Kuroshio Sea (whale shark) | 20–30 min |

[By Purpose] Recommended Stay Plans and Time Needed
For anyone wondering “so which plan should I follow?”, here are three stay patterns you can choose to match your travel style! Find the course that feels right for you and make it a deeply satisfying aquarium visit ♪
- Quick, Efficiency-First Course (Time needed: about 1.5 hours)
- Contents: See only the main exhibits inside in one go! You can enjoy a concentrated dose of the whale shark and reef manta rays in the big “Kuroshio Sea” tank and the beauty of the Coral Sea. I strongly recommend this course for anyone who thinks “I have no time at all, but there’s something I absolutely can’t miss!”
- Classic! Full Enjoyment Course (Time needed: about 2.5 to 3 hours)
- Contents: View the interior thoroughly while fully enjoying the dolphin show at Okichan Theater (about 15 to 20 minutes) and the Sea Turtle and Manatee Pavilions! It’s truly a classic, greedy plan, including shopping at the souvenir shop “Blue Manta.”
- Family and Kids Relaxed Course (Time needed: about 3.5 hours or more)
- Contents: Take a break at the café “Inoh” in front of the big tank, and the kids go wild on the giant play structure “Chibikko Toride (Little Kids’ Fort)”! A packed course that also lets you stroll around Ocean Expo Park and puts smiles on the faces of the whole family.
How to Find Discount Tickets to Save on Admission

The regular fee is ¥2,180 for adults, but using a few methods you can enter a little cheaper.
Typical ones are advance discount tickets sold at “Michi-no-Eki Kyoda” on mainland Okinawa, discount tickets purchased at convenience store ticket machines, and web ticket discounts from travel booking sites.
There are also cases where showing a JAF membership card or a hotel stay plan includes advance tickets, so I recommend checking which discount method suits your situation before your trip.
There’s also a system where people with a disability certificate and one companion enter free.
All on Your Smartphone! Discount Tickets You Can Buy in Advance Online
Recently there are more and more services where you can buy admission tickets in advance with just a smartphone, without going to the ticket machines on site or stopping at Michi-no-Eki.
If you book with a quick tap during travel or free time the day before, on the day you can just show the e-ticket and enter smoothly, which is an especially welcome option for people with tight itineraries.
Among the ones I tried, the one I recommend is the KKday Churaumi Aquarium admission ticket (advance ticket).
It’s a mobile ticket format where you enter just by showing your smartphone screen, so there’s no need to print and it’s nice that you can carry it lightly.
Travel booking sites like Online Travel, Veltra, JTB, and HIS may also handle similar advance tickets, so if you have a service you usually use, it’s worth checking that too.
No Car? No Worries! A Day Tour of Northern Okinawa Including Churaumi Aquarium

For those who say “I’m not confident driving” or “I want to see northern Okinawa without renting a car,” I also recommend a day optional tour that covers popular spots such as Manzamo, Kouri Island, and American Village together with Churaumi Aquarium in one day.
Many plans include pickup from central Naha or major hotels, so the appeal is that you can focus on sightseeing without worrying about driving or directions.
The one I found is Northern Okinawa Day Tour | Churaumi Aquarium, Manzamo, Kouri Island, and American Village.
It’s a plan that covers the northern highlights in one day, so it’s perfect for people who want to make good use of limited travel days.
Gourmet and Lunch Spots Near Churaumi Aquarium
If you want lunch or dinner near the aquarium, I recommend “Okinawan Cuisine Chinuman, Churaumi Aquarium-mae branch.”
It’s an Okinawan izakaya a short distance from the aquarium, where you can enjoy a wide range from classic Okinawan dishes like Okinawa soba with soki and goya champuru to seafood dishes. Its location is easy to use for lunch between sightseeing or dinner after your visit.
If you forget to buy souvenirs, you can also stop by “Umichurara,” the Churaumi Aquarium antenna shop on Kokusai-dori in Naha or inside Naha Airport.
It also carries aquarium-exclusive goods, so it’s reassuring to check even right before you leave.
If You’re Staying Right in Front of Churaumi Aquarium: “Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa”

In fact, this hotel stands almost right in front of Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park! And there’s even a free shuttle bus to near the aquarium (about 6 minutes by car), a location that’s wonderful for sightseeing.
It’s perfect both for people who think “I want to enjoy the aquarium first thing in the morning!” and for those who want to stay several nights relaxing in the Motobu area. And every room has an ocean view, and the breakfast buffet is well reviewed too!
I introduce the real picture of the rooms, breakfast, and access from actually staying in the article below, so if you’re curious, please do check it out!
Churaumi Aquarium Sightseeing Tips and How to Avoid Crowds

- The Kuroshio Sea tends to get crowded around feeding times (15:00 and 17:00), so one option is to shift your time a bit and see it first

- The outdoor area has strong sunlight, so don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and drinks
- Parking is free, but it can fill up in the daytime during peak season, so arriving early is reassuring
- The ticket machines support cashless payment, so it goes smoothly if you prepare an IC card or electronic money in advance
