Kairyou-yu: Inside Shibuya’s Renovated Sento (Plus Crowd Levels)

English Articles

This time I’m introducing Kairyou-yu, a Shibuya public bathhouse with over 100 years of history that had its renewal reopening in 2018.

It’s a 12-minute walk from Shibuya Station, sitting right between Shibuya, Daikanyama, and Ebisu, and with its stylish design and an auto-löyly sauna, it’s hugely popular with people of all ages, men and women alike!

So Joe, a hot-spring and sauna enthusiast, went and checked it out — in this post I’ll share what Kairyou-yu is like, along with how crowded it gets.

Kairyou-yu: The Basics

Kairyou-yu Shibuya basic info

About a 12-minute walk from Shibuya Station, Kairyou-yu reopened on December 21, 2018, after a renewal that gave it a sauna for both men and women — putting it right at the cutting edge of Shibuya’s bathhouse scene.

It was first founded in 1916, built when the founder’s great-grandfather moved to Tokyo from Toyama, and it was later given a stylish renewal by bathhouse architect Kentaro Imai.

Its standout features are two soft-water baths with high-concentration carbonated water, a semi-private cold bath, and a humid sauna with auto-löyly that was expanded in the renewal.

Soft water, which holds moisture well, and carbonated water, which is said to improve circulation, make this a nice pick for women too!

Location

The bathhouse sits in a quiet residential area. Note that on weekdays it doesn’t open in the morning — it opens at 1:00 PM.

During the day it runs 300 yen per 15 minutes — Tokyo pricing — but it’s still nice to have parking so close by.

How to Get There

Here’s how to get to Kairyou-yu.

This time I’ll walk you through the route on foot from Shibuya Station’s C1 exit. It’s a fair distance, but as long as you don’t miss the last turn, it’s simple enough!

How to get to Kairyou-yu in Shibuya

Head for Shibuya Station’s C1 exit.
If you’ve been to Shibuya Police Station or Roppongi-dori, this exit might look familiar, but it’s a fairly minor one.

Exit C2 is on the opposite side of Meiji-dori, but heading from C2 instead won’t make much difference.

Take the escalator up to street level, then head toward the main road, Meiji-dori.

Continue straight along the road and you’ll see the Sawayaka Shinkin Bank building — turn left into the narrow alley there. The alley is easy to miss, so keep an eye out!

The entrance isn’t the first thing you see — it’s about 15 meters further in. A lot of people apparently mistake the coin laundry out front for the entrance.

Touring the Facility

Now for the part you’ve been waiting for — a tour of Kairyou-yu! Let’s go!

The entrance has a sleek, tasteful look with sophisticated gray concrete block.

Even the bath-entrance curtain features a whale design — the whole atmosphere feels nothing like your typical neighborhood bathhouse.

The concept, apparently, is a whale that wandered into the bathhouse, finding its “totonou” moment out in space. It almost feels like it could pull you right in.

Shoe Lockers

Facing the entrance is a block wall covered in square patterns, with shoe lockers around it.

Find an open locker with a key. If you’re visiting with family or a partner, the larger lockers on the bottom row are the better choice.

Next to the lockers are two ticket machines where you buy your bathing-plus-sauna ticket before heading inside!

Front Desk

Walk in and the front desk is right there on the left.

If you want to pay with PayPay, skip the ticket machine and just let the front desk know.

After paying, you’ll get your locker key, a sauna wristband, and a bath towel set.

The bath towel even has “Kairyou-yu” printed on it — a nice attention to detail.

Bathing Area

Behind the front desk are the men’s and women’s bath curtains, each stylishly decorated with a whale design.

The bathing area that draws so much attention has an overall black-toned interior, with blue indirect lighting illuminating the steam rising from the baths — it has a distinctive atmosphere all its own.

There are only two baths: a hot one and a slightly lukewarm one.

The body soap, shampoo, and conditioner are all from the Scalp D line, which helps keep your scalp healthy. There’s also a carbonated foam face wash available.

There’s also a Ladies’ Day with swapped men’s/women’s sides!

Sauna

Quoted from Kairyou-yu's official Twitter (women's sauna)

The sauna room has two tiers; the renovated men’s sauna has the sauna stove facing you as you walk in.

Seating is split left and right, holding 5–6 people per side and about 12 at full capacity. The upper tier fills up fast, and once three people are seated on the lower tier, it gets a bit awkward to get out.

It reads around 90°C, but since it’s a humid sauna, it feels noticeably hotter than the thermometer suggests. There’s no TV.

Auto-löyly runs every 20 minutes, on the hour, 20, and 40 — when it triggers, the sauna stones light up and water is sprayed about three times, sending the room temperature up fast.

The sauna room is kept dim, with healing music playing that feels like you’re inside an aquarium — you can lose yourself in meditation without worrying about anyone watching.

Despite being a public bathhouse, they sometimes run surprise Aufguss sessions too!

Cold Bath

Quoted from Kairyou-yu's official Twitter

Walled in on three sides, the cold bath is a semi-private space with a different herbal scent each day — a surprisingly original touch!

The entrance is narrow and can get a bit congested when people are splashing water on themselves, but at around 15°C it’s bitingly cold, and maybe because of that, turnover is unusually fast (laughs).

The moody blue indirect lighting on the cold bath makes it feel even colder.

Cool-Down Space

Quoted from Kairyou-yu's official Twitter

There’s only a single cool-down chair in the bathing area, so it’s first come first served, but they’ve newly added an outdoor air-bathing space with an oscillating fan — is this really still a public bathhouse?

Near the entrance there are 3 chairs with long backrests, and further in another 6 standard chairs — plenty of seating overall.

There’s not quite enough room to fully stretch your legs out, but for a public bathhouse, the quality here is hard to beat!

Wooden posts stretch up toward the ceiling, and the breeze coming through the gaps feels great on your skin.

Changing Area & Powder Room

The lockers in the changing area come in various sizes, but you can only use the one matching the number you were given at the front desk, so it’s entirely random.

There are two benches in the middle, and the space feels generously sized for a public bathhouse — it’s not a bad spot to cool down here too! There’s also a vending machine in the changing area.

The hair dryers are Dysons, 20 yen for 3 minutes. If you need a dryer, remember to bring some coins.

Lounge & Rest Area

Past the changing area, near the back of the entrance, there’s only a small waiting area with a few chairs — it’s not really substantial enough to call a proper lounge.

It’s often occupied by people waiting to get in, so you should assume you probably won’t get to use it. There’s no dining area either.

Drinks are sold at reasonable prices: ion water in 500ml for 150 yen or 900ml for 180 yen, and Ilohas water for 100 yen.

Plenty of people grab ion water to rehydrate, so it’s worth bringing a rubber band or similar so you can tell your bottle apart from everyone else’s!

How Crowded Does It Get?

How crowded does Kairyou-yu in Shibuya get

Constantly refining itself to stay ahead of the times, Kairyou-yu is understandably a place where crowding is a real concern.

So what days and times does Kairyou-yu tend to get busy?

For men, it gets crowded nearly every day — weekdays and weekends alike — with a wait to get in happening on and off throughout most of the day.

There are reports of people lining up even before opening, that’s how popular it is. Women may also face a wait on weekends and holidays.

The facility caps entry at a maximum of 25 people at a time, every day.

I actually timed my visit for around 7 PM on a Saturday, dinner time, hoping it’d be quieter — it wasn’t: I was 7th in line, about a 30-minute wait!

Since nearly everyone there is using the sauna, assuming everyone takes the full 120-minute course, during busy periods roughly one person gets in every 5 minutes on average.

In other words, if 5 people are ahead of you, expect to wait around 20–25 minutes.

Even with the entry cap in place, since every single guest is there for the sauna, a short sauna wait can still form depending on the time of day.

The washing area and baths, on the other hand, are never crowded — it’s a bit unbalanced. The cool-down space has 10 seats, so unless something unusual happens, you won’t have to wait there.

One trick: aim for a day with bad weather, and you might just get in without waiting!

Pricing

Kairyou-yu Shibuya pricing

With a stylish look inside and out, an auto-löyly sauna, and even an outdoor air-bathing space, Kairyou-yu checks every box.

Naturally you’ll want to know the price. Since it’s a public bathhouse, the base bathing fee is 480 yen, with the sauna as a separate 450 yen charge.

TypeAdult Price
Bathing (90 min)480 yen
Bathing + Sauna (120 min)930 yen
Sauna only (120 min)450 yen
Junior high student (90 min)300 yen
Elementary student (90 min)180 yen

My Honest Impressions

This genuinely ranks among the best public bathhouses out there!!

Fitting, really, for an innovative bathhouse in Shibuya, a neighborhood that’s always ahead of the curve.

Unlike the old stereotype of a public bathhouse, the crowd skewed young — over 80% were young men and women, and there were plenty of foreign visitors too.

Perhaps because of the younger crowd, there were, unfortunately, a few groups chatting loudly without much consideration for others.

The downsides are being a bit far from the station and consistently crowded. Take those two things away, and it’s a perfect score.

My senses feel sharper than ever after another good sauna session today!

Joe

Kairyou-yu might be a public bathhouse, but with its stylish design and serious sauna game, it easily holds its own against any dedicated spa facility. Just be ready to wait a bit if you go at a busy time!
