Hello! I’m Joe (@chiropiyo0331).
Today I’m introducing “Thermae-yu Nishiazabu,” which opened in April 2023 in Nishiazabu, Minato Ward, about a 5-minute walk from Roppongi Station.
Eight years after the first Thermae-yu opened in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho in 2015, the second Thermae-yu appeared in Nishiazabu in 2023!
Its selling points are a high-temperature sauna of nearly 110°C and a cold plunge up to 163 cm deep, plus a world that evokes ancient Egypt — so, as a hot spring and sauna lover, I went to try it right away!
I’ll tell you what kind of place Thermae-yu Nishiazabu is, along with how crowded it gets!

Basic Info: Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

Located about a 5-minute walk from Roppongi Station on the Tokyo Metro, Thermae-yu Nishiazabu opened in April 2023. It’s a premium Egypt-themed sauna and spa facility open 23 hours a day.

Thermae-yu Nishiazabu operates floors from the 1st basement to the 3rd floor, and the interior evokes ancient Egypt — gorgeous, stylish, and extremely comfortable.
The 1st floor has the front desk, a restaurant, a fitness gym, and esthetic & body care. The 1st basement has the men’s and women’s baths, and the 2nd floor has the rock bath and rest lounge.
The 3rd floor is a guest-room floor exclusively for overnight guests, which opened in June 2023 — and of course guests can use the sauna and spa as much as they like!

Inside Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

Let’s sneak inside and take a tour of Thermae-yu Nishiazabu!
Once you enter, there’s a carpet that appears to be Egyptian-made, and gold walls for a gorgeous atmosphere.
There’s no step, so it’s easy to miss, but shoes are not allowed on the carpet.
If you step on it with your shoes on, the staff will immediately warn you!
Unlike the wristband you receive after check-in, the shoe locker is self-managed.
1st Floor: Front Desk

Go through the gate and check in at the front desk right in front of you.
The gold is incredible. (I’m at a loss for words.)
A membership card costs 100 yen and lets you enter at the member rate on the spot.
If you register as a member, you save 100 yen off the regular price!
You’re handed only a wristband, and are directed to the neighboring counter to pick up your bath towel and in-house wear set.

You receive the in-house wear and bath towel set at the counter.

At the counter, I spotted Tutankhamun, the ancient Egyptian pharaoh!

You can also buy various amenities such as hot eye masks and innerwear for an extra charge. Handy if you accidentally forget something!

The men’s in-house wear is blue with some Egyptian-style design elements.
Do I feel like an Egyptian now?!
Basement 1: Locker Room at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

As soon as you go down to the 1st basement, you’ll see the men’s and women’s bath noren curtains.
Here too, a design featuring Anubis, the god from Egyptian mythology (I think?), is incorporated.

The locker room is two-tier, and the lockers lock and unlock automatically when you tap your wristband.
Some lockers already have noticeable scratches and dents, which is a real shame — I’d like people to use them carefully to keep the place looking nice.

The lockers are an appropriate width and designed to fit most business bags and business backpacks. The height is a little short, so travel light if you can.

The powder room has no chairs at all — you use it standing.

Each station is equipped with a ReFa beauty hair dryer that finishes your hair beautifully.
It’s an excellent device that finely controls the heat from the dryer and the moisture level of your hair.

For face care, they use Predia, a professional-use amenity brand developed by Kose. Women will be satisfied with its moisturizing feel and men with its non-sticky finish, and it can be used by both.
Basement 1: Baths & Saunas at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu
The bathing area also has an interior as if you were in ancient Egypt, with Egyptian paintings here and there.
The men’s bathing area is based on black and finished in a chic, modern style.
The one on the far left is a single cold plunge with a single-digit water temperature. The middle is a bath at about 41°C.
The one at the very back is a cold plunge up to 163 cm deep.
The women’s bathing area has pink floors and walls, designed to give an elegant impression.
Egyptian paintings decorate the walls.
Thermae-yu Nishiazabu has three saunas, and this is the dry sauna.
It’s wide and spacious with three tiers, at about 87°C. There’s a TV with sound, and seats fill up starting from around the TV.
There are sauna heaters at both the left and right ends, and automatic löyly is installed.
You’d think aroma water falls from the ceiling, but steam is actually generated inside.
The automatic löyly runs four times an hour — every 15 minutes, at :00, :15, :30, and :45 — which is frequent.
Because of the many löyly cycles, the humidity is higher than the temperature suggests, and you sweat more quickly and efficiently than you’d expect.

The men-only cold plunge near the sauna is a whopping 163 cm deep! As far as I could find, it’s the deepest!
The water is cold at about 15°C, and anyone can submerge their whole body in it.
Of course, there are two steps at suitable heights, so you can adjust depending on your height.
★ Check out Otaka Ryusenji no Yu, with a 160 cm-deep cold plunge (currently available in Japanese only)!

The other cold plunge is a single-person tub at about 8°C.
Single-digit cold plunges have been increasing lately thanks to strong demand from sauna lovers.
Few people use it, but it’s recommended for anyone who wants the more painful-yet-pleasurable cold plunge experience.

After the cold plunge, sitting on a nearby chair to get “totonou” is also recommended, but since you’re here, try going into the cool room.
It holds three people, and cold air pours down from above your head to cool your body.
Few spa facilities in Tokyo have a cool room, so be sure to try it!
Unfortunately, there’s no space for outdoor air bathing.
2nd Floor: Rest Lounge at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

After getting “totonou” in the sauna, take a break in the rest lounge.
There are plenty of rest lounges on the 2nd floor.

The facility is filled with aroma, and you’ll fall into a deep sleep in no time.

Each reclining chair has one USB port and one outlet, so you can freely charge your phone or computer.

This separate area is nicknamed the “snoring room,” a room reserved for people who snore while they sleep.

There are also a few workspace seats, so if you have no meetings during the day on a remote-work day, you can work in a great environment and fit in sauna sessions in between.
2nd Floor: Rock Bath at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

The rock bath area is near the 2nd-floor rest lounge.
Pay the additional 900 yen at the front desk, then change into the dedicated rock-bath wear.

In rock-bath healing, which warms you to the core with far-infrared rays and promotes sweating, you can enjoy four types of rock baths: agate, red-melt brick, yellow onyx, and red travertine.
1st Floor: Restaurant at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

On the 1st floor there’s a restaurant where you can enjoy ethnic cuisine.
The presence of the chairs, like something in a royal palace, is overwhelming, and may actually keep you from relaxing.

The menu has somewhat unusual sauna food, such as Thai-style seafood fried rice, gapao rice, Thai-style shrimp green curry, mapo tofu rice bowl, shrimp in chili sauce with a rice set, and spicy fried rice.
Classic drinking snacks like edamame and french fries are also available.

Various alcoholic drinks are available too, but all are priced on the high side, at Nishiazabu prices..
The other restaurant, Sansui Sozai, is a Japanese restaurant with private rooms such as sunken kotatsu seating, so it’s a space where you can be comfortable even inside the restaurant!

I ordered the Thai-style shrimp green curry for 1,760 yen including tax.
It tastes good, but the portion isn’t big — it’s a spicy green curry with a few slices of vegetables and a few shrimp.
If you want a hearty meal after the sauna, it’s a little unsatisfying.

Each shrimp is big and plump. It goes well with the green curry and is delicious!!
1st Floor: Fitness Gym at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

It’s separate from the regular fee, but for an additional 900 yen you can use a full-fledged gym.
It isn’t very large, but there are few users, and you can comfortably use it, mainly the free weights.
1st Floor: Esthetic & Massage at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu

On the same 1st floor as the front desk, you can receive traditional Balinese oil treatments, a men-only men’s esthetic, and various treatments focused on fascia.
Of course, there’s also a full lineup of menus for women, including a beauty facial that promotes healthy, beautiful skin.

The treatment rooms include an open area and private rooms, so groups can use them too if they coordinate their times.

If you’re alone, I recommend a private room for a more special space.
Decide on your treatment menu in advance and make a reservation when you check in!
3rd Floor: Guest Rooms at Thermae-yu Nishiazabu
Thermae-yu Nishiazabu also opened its accommodation facilities in June 2023.
All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a TV, and Wi-Fi, and overnight guests can use the sauna and spa, rock bath, and restaurants inside the facility.
The room types available are as follows, and all are single rooms only.
| Room Type | Facilities |
| Economy Single | Desk, air conditioning, 32-inch LCD TV, Wi-Fi Bed width: 100 cm |
| Standard Single | Desk, air conditioning, 32-inch LCD TV, Wi-Fi Bed width: 110 cm |
| Deluxe Single | Bed width: 140 cm (double bed) |
| Premium Single | Desk, air conditioning, 50-inch LCD TV, Wi-Fi Bed width: 140 cm (double bed) Shower and toilet included |
Admission Prices at Thermae-yu

What you’re probably most curious about is the price.
Thermae-yu Nishiazabu is in Minato Ward’s Nishiazabu area, which always ranks near the top as a dream neighborhood.
With utility and labor costs soaring, some spa facilities have announced repeated price increases.
| Type | Men | Women |
| Regular fee | 3,500 yen | 3,200 yen |
| Member fee | 3,300 yen | 3,000 yen |
| Membership card | 100 yen | |
| Late-night surcharge | +1,900 yen | |
| Friday / day-before-holiday surcharge | +400 yen | |
| Weekend / holiday surcharge | +900 yen | |
| Early-morning course (Mon–Fri) *6:00 AM–10:00 AM | 1,900 yen | 1,600 yen |
| Early-morning course (weekends, holidays, special days) *6:00 AM–10:00 AM | 2,300 yen | 2,000 yen |
| Rock bath & gym | +900 yen | |
The regular fee has no time limit as long as you leave by midnight, but it’s set quite high at 3,500 yen for men. The fee includes a bath towel set and in-house wear set.
On weekends, there’s a surcharge of +900 yen, for a total of 4,400 yen. If you eat at the restaurant, it averages 1,800 yen (drinks, including alcohol, extra), so you’ll exceed 6,000 yen.
This applies only to people who live near Nishiazabu, but the weekday early-morning course is a great deal at 1,600 yen for women.
Are There Coupons for Thermae-yu Nishiazabu?

I looked into various discounts and coupons for using Thermae-yu Nishiazabu more cheaply, but as of June 2023 (the time of writing) there were none.
I’ll update this as soon as I find any.
How Crowded Is Thermae-yu Nishiazabu?
With the recent sauna boom, the number of facilities has grown and so has the number of users, so wherever you go, sauna and spa facilities are crowded, right?
So on which days and at what times does Thermae-yu Nishiazabu get crowded?
Thermae-yu Nishiazabu isn’t crowded enough to be stressful even on weekends, and you can use it relatively comfortably at almost any time. Weekdays from morning to evening in particular are empty, and sometimes it’s nearly deserted.
Perhaps because the Nishiazabu location in Minato Ward makes fewer people want to drop in casually, or because the weekend price of over 4,000 yen is high compared with other sauna and spa facilities, it’s a big plus that you can use it comfortably even on weekends.
If you think of it as paying for comfort, it may actually be cheap.
My Impressions of Thermae-yu Nishiazabu
Honestly, the admission and restaurant prices are on the high side, partly because of the location. But compared with Thermae-yu Kabukicho, I could use this one comfortably and without stress, so I’m satisfied!
The other guests seemed to be a relatively high-status crowd, and I thought the manners were good.
There were also many foreign visitors, and at certain times of day the conversation got a bit loud, but that can’t be helped.
The saunas are top-notch: you can choose the temperature and humidity to match your mood and condition that day, and being able to soak up to your shoulders while standing in the cold plunge becomes addictive. Combined with the air-conditioned cool room, it’s the perfect setup.
★ For my review of Thermae-yu Kabukicho, the first location, see my Shinjuku Thermae-yu article (currently available in Japanese only).

That’s my report on Thermae-yu Nishiazabu! It’s pricey, but the calm atmosphere and the quality of the saunas make it a great choice when you want to unwind in the middle of Tokyo. Thanks for reading, and see you in the next article!
