This time I stayed at “Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa” in Motobu, Okinawa!
Honestly, before I booked “Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa” I had a few doubts. It’s been open for quite a few years now, so I kept seeing reviews calling it “old,” and I wondered whether a hotel with such a prime spot right in front of the Churaumi Aquarium could really be comfortable inside. But after actually staying there, most of that worry disappeared! In this post I’ll show you, with plenty of my own photos, just how “old” the hotel really feels and how good that famous breakfast buffet actually is. If you’re searching for a “Hotel Mahaina blog” or “Hotel Mahaina reviews,” I hope this helps!

Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa: The Basics and Its Reputation
Right by the Churaumi Aquarium! Hotel Mahaina’s Appeal and Access
Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa is a resort hotel in Motobu, in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island. Its concept is “wellness” — being embraced by nature and healed back into your true self — and it’s designed with long stays in mind. All 230 rooms have an ocean view, which is a genuinely exciting touch!
Its biggest draw is the location: it sits almost right in front of the Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park! It’s about a 70-minute drive from Naha Airport, but it also has good access to island beaches like Minna Island and Sesoko Island, making it a perfect base for anyone who wants to make the most of the Motobu area.
Another nice touch is that the hotel runs a free shuttle bus to the Churaumi Aquarium! It’s only about a 6-minute drive, so you can pick up a timetable at the front desk and head straight off to the aquarium. The front desk also sells advance aquarium tickets, so you can head out without carrying much (it’s worth checking the exact timetable at the front desk once you arrive).
Here’s the address.
1456 Yamakawa, Motobu, Kunigami District, Okinawa 905-0205

This is the exterior of Hotel Mahaina where I stayed! It’s a uniquely shaped, pyramid-like building that’s easy to spot from a distance. Palm trees line the entrance, and my excitement was already through the roof the moment I arrived!

I double-checked the hotel name on the sign out front. This is the moment it really hits you: “I’ve arrived!”

The landscaping around the entrance was also well kept, giving off a real resort atmosphere.

The lobby has high ceilings and feels wonderfully open. It has a calm atmosphere that made the tiredness of travel just melt away.

Next to the lobby there’s also a relaxed lounge area with sofa seating — a great spot to catch your breath before or after checking in. The front desk staff were also very courteous, and check-in went so smoothly that I forgot how tired I was from the journey. As long as you avoid the busiest times, you shouldn’t have much of a wait.

After checking in, the corridor leading to the room floors also had soft, calming lighting and was easy to walk through.
The Truth Behind Those “Old” Reviews
Let’s start by checking out the exterior. The distinctive pyramid-shaped building really does look impressive when you see it from the front.

From the side you can clearly see the rows of balconies. This really is a building that lives up to “every room has an ocean view”!

Looking up at it, it’s genuinely impressive — the uniquely shaped building against the blue sky had me stopping constantly to take photos.

Here’s another shot from a different angle. On a clear day, the color of the building really stands out against the blue sky.

Taking in the whole building, you really get a sense of its scale. That pyramid silhouette has real presence even from a distance.
You often see reviews saying “the building is old,” but from the outside it looked well maintained enough that I didn’t really notice the years. Of course, it has been open for a while, so you can see a bit of age in the details, but I never got a “run-down” impression just from looking at it.
Looking through reviews from other guests, a few common themes came up.
- Location: Popular as a base for sightseeing thanks to its closeness to the Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park, though some mention the distance from Naha Airport.
- Rooms: Highly rated for size, though a fair number of reviews mention the building and fixtures feeling a bit dated.
- Food: The breakfast buffet gets very high marks. The dinner buffet is good too, though opinions on it are a bit more mixed.
- Service: Staff are praised for being courteous and attentive, especially toward families with kids.
- Value: Rated highly by families who prioritize space, facilities, and price over pure luxury.
Room Review: What It’s Really Like to Stay in an Ocean Twin at Hotel Mahaina
Room Size and Interior (The Truth About “Old” and How Clean It Feels)
The first thing I noticed walking into the room was: it’s spacious! There’s plenty of room for a family to spread out comfortably.

The entryway right as you step into the room. Slippers were properly set out, which was a nice little touch of thoughtfulness.

This is what greets you right after the entryway. The furniture does show its age a bit, but the room was kept clean, and honestly it didn’t feel nearly as “old” as some reviews suggested.

The bed was a solid size, and comfortable too! It did a great job resetting me after a long day of travel.

The desk and TV are compact but well laid out, so getting a bit of work done or getting ready in the morning was no trouble at all.

And this is the view from the window! Classic Okinawan sea and greenery spread out below, giving the room a wonderfully open feel even while inside.

The sink area is nice and roomy too — plenty of space for two people to use it side by side.

The bathtub was also a good size — plenty deep enough to soak away the tiredness from travel.

There was also plenty of closet space, so it wasn’t a problem even with a fair amount of luggage.

There’s also a safety box under the desk. Handy for storing valuables while you’re off at the pool or the beach.

The amenities were all there too, which was reassuring in case I’d forgotten to pack something.

Here’s a wider view of the whole room. Beyond the bed area there’s a desk and window, and through the sheer curtains you can just make out that classic Okinawan scenery. It’s an open layout that would feel comfortable even for two people.

Both beds were a solid size, and there was plenty of room left over for luggage.

The chair by the desk was also well built and looked like it would stay comfortable even for longer stretches of sitting.

There’s also a mirror below the TV, making the layout easy to use when getting ready.

A kettle and cups were properly provided at the desk, so I could even enjoy a cup of tea in the room.

There’s also a small sink area, which was handy for a bit of quick washing up.

The room also came with its own fridge, which was great for keeping drinks and souvenirs.
Recommended Room Types (Ocean Twin and Family-Friendly Options)
Rooms at Hotel Mahaina are split between the “Ocean Floor,” which has great views, and the more understated “Superior Floor.” Here are the main room types.
| Room Type | Floor | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Twin | Ocean Floor | 44–46㎡, up to 3 guests — the Western-style twin with the hotel’s best views |
| Ocean Premier | Ocean Floor | An Ocean Floor room with a step up in fittings and comfort |
| Ocean Family | Ocean Floor | A roomier Western-style option built with families in mind |
| Superior Twin | Superior Floor | A relaxed Western-style twin, more spacious than the standard grade |
| Junior Suite (Japanese/Western) | Upper grade | A larger suite combining Japanese and Western-style rooms, handy for groups or larger parties |
I wasn’t able to confirm exactly which type our room fell under, so if you want a specific type like the “Ocean Twin,” it’s safest to double-check the room type name when you book. If you want extra space for the family, the “Ocean Family” is worth considering, and for larger groups the “Junior Suite (Japanese/Western)” is another good option.
Breakfast Buffet: The Menu at “Ma-sen” and How to Avoid the Crowds
Plenty of Okinawan Food Too! Recommended Breakfast Buffet Dishes
Honestly, the thing I got most excited about during this stay was the breakfast buffet restaurant, “Ma-sen”! It’s lined with both Japanese and Western dishes made with Okinawan ingredients, and you can even watch some of it being cooked at the live kitchen — it’s a fun buffet just to look at.

The tables are well spaced out, and the room felt bright and pleasant in the morning light.

There’s a whole lineup of dishes with local flavor, like Okinawa soba and goya (bitter melon) dishes. It really delivers on that “since I’ve come all the way to Okinawa” feeling.

There’s also a good variety of small side dishes! Great if you like trying a little of everything.

There’s plenty on the rice side too, so you can mix and match with the side dishes to build your own breakfast plate.

My personal favorite was this special Okinawa soba made with Agu pork! It’s a signature dish made to order at the live kitchen, and the broth, rich with Agu pork flavor, was outstanding.

Here’s the bowl once it was served to me. It was piled high with toppings, and made for a satisfying first bowl of the morning.

There’s also a grilled food corner, and it was popular enough that a line formed.

The bread and dessert corner was well stocked too. The smell of freshly baked bread kept my appetite going strong from the morning.

There’s even a pancake corner! It’s a hit with kids and adults alike, and it makes the morning feel a bit special.

Here’s what my plate ended up looking like! There was so much to choose from that I ended up piling on a bit of everything. Honestly, this alone had me thinking, “I want to stay one more night.”
Busy Times and Tips for a Smoother Visit
The breakfast buffet at Ma-sen is busiest between 7 and 8am, when most guests show up. Going right when it opens, or a bit later after 9am, tends to be noticeably calmer. The live kitchen and pancake corner are popular, so if there’s something specific you want, it’s worth checking it out early.
Quick tip: If you want to avoid the crowds, going right when the restaurant opens is your best bet. Popular items like the live kitchen dishes and freshly baked bread can build up a line as the morning goes on, so getting there early means you can enjoy it at a more relaxed pace. Avoid the peak window (roughly the first hour after opening) if you can, since that’s when things get crowded and popular dishes can run out.
Pools and Facilities: Making the Most of Hotel Mahaina
Garden Pool and Indoor Pool (Great for Families with Kids)
Hotel Mahaina has two pools, one outdoor and one indoor. The outdoor pool is 30 meters long with an ocean view, and there’s also a shallow area for kids and a children’s pool with a fountain, so it’s reassuring for families. The indoor pool is on the first floor of the South Building, measures 20m x 6.25m, and is usable year-round in a bright, glass-walled space.

The contrast between the blue sky and the pool is just perfect! Even just relaxing here for a while makes the trip feel more satisfying.

Seen from above, you get a good sense of the pool’s full shape. The contrast between the green and blue was really beautiful.

An angle that takes in both the building and the pool together — it really conveys the resort atmosphere.

Up close, the water’s clarity really stood out! With palm trees lining the view, I felt fully immersed in the resort atmosphere.

Parasols and loungers line the poolside, designed to keep you comfortable even under Okinawa’s strong sun. It’s apparently lit up at night too, so it’s worth enjoying at different times of day. There’s also a shallow area for kids, so families with young children can relax here too.

Another angle taking in both the pool and the building together made the resort feel even more vivid.
The Large Bath and Other In-House Facilities

There’s a spacious lobby area inside the hotel too, with a relaxed atmosphere for sitting on the sofas. I didn’t use it myself this time, but it looks like a nice spot to stop and rest for a bit.

Small rest areas are dotted around the hotel too, which was handy for catching a breather between activities.

The signage inside was also easy to follow, so I never felt lost even on my first visit.

The in-house shop sells souvenirs and everyday items too, so you can pick up the essentials on-site if you forget anything.
The hotel also has a large communal bath, though I didn’t use it on this stay — if you’re thinking of using it, it’s worth confirming the latest operating status before you book. There’s also no fitness gym on site, so if you want to stay active, it’s worth planning around the pools instead.
- Wi-Fi: Available in the lobby and all guest rooms
- Parking: Around 300 spaces, so arriving by car is no problem
- Smoking: Please confirm the smoking policy for the building and rooms when booking
- Pets: Generally not allowed (please check the latest policy before booking)
What About Dinner? Great Food Around the Hotel (Motobu Area)
Making the Most of Hanasaki Marche and Nearby Restaurants
On this trip, instead of eating dinner at the hotel, we went out to eat in the Motobu area. The hotel does have a dinner buffet at the “Ma-sen” restaurant, but there are also plenty of Okinawan restaurants and seafood spots nearby, so my honest take is that “if you’re only staying one night, going out to eat is a perfectly good option too.” Whether you eat at the hotel restaurant or head out really comes down to how many nights you’re staying and what you’re in the mood for — and that flexibility is one of the nice things about this area.
If you’re looking for somewhere to eat dinner in the Motobu area, “Okinawa Hanasaki Marche” — home to the first Starbucks in northern Okinawa — is one option worth considering. It’s a newer spot with a cluster of restaurants, and it’s easy to get to from the hotel, so you can decide where to go based on your mood that day. I didn’t end up using it myself this time, but it’s worth looking into alongside some Okinawan and seafood restaurants ahead of time so you have a few options ready for the day.
Hotel Mahaina: The Pros and Cons of Our Stay
What Was Great (Value, Location, and Breakfast)
- Every room has an ocean view, which makes just spending time in the room feel good
- The breakfast buffet’s quality and variety
- Great access to the Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park
- Both indoor and outdoor pools, so you can enjoy them whatever the weather
- Courteous staff
What Gave Us Pause, and How to Avoid Booking Mistakes
- You can feel the building and facilities’ age in places
- No fitness gym
- It takes a while to get here from Naha Airport (about 70 minutes by car)
Here are some common booking mistakes worth keeping in mind.
- Booking expecting “a brand-new, luxury hotel” tends to lead to disappointment over the building’s age — it’s better to think of it as a hotel that prioritizes space and location.
- Underestimating the distance from Naha Airport and packing a tight schedule can leave you exhausted just from the travel on day one — it’s best not to over-plan your arrival day.
- Avoiding the breakfast buffet’s peak time (roughly the first hour after opening) is easier said than done, but skipping that advice means you’re more likely to run into crowds or sold-out dishes.
- Some guests book assuming there’s a large bath and a fitness gym, but note that there’s no gym on site.
Since the breakfast buffet is such a highlight here, if you’re unsure which plan to pick, a “breakfast included” plan is a safe bet. As mentioned above, eating dinner out is also a solid option, but if you’re worn out from travel on your first day, a plan with both meals included can make things easier.
| Plan | What’s Included | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Room only | Accommodation only | Those who want to eat out in the area |
| Breakfast included | Accommodation + Ma-sen breakfast buffet | Anyone who just wants to enjoy a great breakfast (our top pick) |
| Half board (breakfast & dinner) | Accommodation + breakfast + dinner buffet | Guests tired from travel on their first night, or who want to relax at the hotel |
Prices and plan details change depending on the season, so it’s best to check the latest information on each booking site before you reserve.
How It Rates for Families and Different Types of Trips
| Trip Type | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Families with kids | Excellent | Spacious rooms, pools, and staff who are great with kids |
| Trips centered on the Churaumi Aquarium | Excellent | Practically walking distance — ideal as a sightseeing base |
| Travelers who prioritize breakfast | Excellent | The Ma-sen breakfast buffet is highly satisfying |
| Those wanting a new, luxury hotel | Fair | The building’s age can feel like a gap from expectations |
| Anyone who prioritizes a fitness routine | Fair | There’s no gym on site |
- Families: Excellent — a great combination of pools, spacious rooms, and staff who are good with kids
- Couples: Good — you can relax in an ocean-view room or in the lounge
- Solo travelers: Good — a convenient base for aquarium sightseeing, though the facilities are built more with a lively family crowd in mind
- Older travelers: Good — rooms are spacious and easy to move around in, but since the hotel itself covers some distance, comfortable walking shoes are a good idea
