What Is Denpaku, Anyway?
The lodging’s name includes “Denpaku.”
So what exactly is “Denpaku”?
The “den” (伝) means to “pass on” the traditions and legends of Amami Oshima. To create a “succession of tradition” through encounters with visitors, Denpaku offers three accommodation facilities.
| Property | Features |
|---|---|
| Denpaku Amami Kominka | Renovated traditional house |
| Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA | Villas rented out as whole buildings |
| Denpaku Amami Hotel | Complex hotel with a restaurant and shop |
Each has a different concept, but this time I stayed at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA.
Who Should Stay at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA

Amami Oshima is the third largest island in Japan after Okinawa’s main island and Sado Island, with a richness it can be proud of on a global scale, including beautiful beaches known as the “Blue Angel,” mangrove forests, and endangered species.
With more than 500,000 tourists visiting each year, there are about 140 hotels scattered around Amami Oshima.
I chose this hotel for my trip to Amami Oshima, and after actually staying here, the people I think Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA suits best are as follows.
・You want to relax in elegant style while looking at the beautiful sea
・You want to make someone special happy by gifting them a trip for an anniversary

First, people who want to relax in elegant style while looking at the beautiful sea.
Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA is located in the northern part of Amami Oshima, just a 10-second walk from the sea and beach!
Hotels in the northern area are perfect for people who want to spend lazy hours at the beach and by the sea.
You can even enjoy breakfast with the sea right in front of you.
Second, people who want to make someone special happy by gifting them a trip for an anniversary.
If you want to create lasting memories together at a hotel a notch above your usual trips, this lovely villa resort hotel, with a private beach right in front and a sunset all to yourselves, will make you feel like you’re at an overseas resort.
Access to Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA

If you make a reservation in advance there is a free pick-up from Amami Airport, but if you want to get around to nearby sights, a rental car is a must.

Guest Rooms at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA

Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA has several room types, listed in the table below.
I stayed in the Standard Villa, but even the standard class is an open, airy room with a view over the sea.
In every room, the bath, toilet, and washbasin are not separate but sit in the same open area with no partitions. The rooms are spacious enough, though, so you don’t need to worry much about the plumbing area.
| Room type | Size | Sea-view bath | Bed type |
| Deluxe Villa | 62–80 ㎡ | △ *Twin is ○, queen is × | 1 queen-size bed (double) or 2 single-size beds (twin) |
| Standard Villa | 44–48 ㎡ | ○ | 1 queen-size bed |
| Cozy Suite Villa (with theater) | 88 ㎡ | × | 2 single-size beds |
| Exclusive Suite Villa Maisonette | 60.4 ㎡ | ○ | 1 queen-size bed |
| Horizon Deluxe Villa | 42–47 ㎡ | ○ | 1 queen-size bed (double) or 2 single-size beds (twin) |
| Horizon Deluxe Villa, Triple Bed | 59 ㎡ | ○ | 3 single-size beds (triple) |
| Serenity Suite Villa | 69 ㎡ | ○ | 2 single-size beds (twin) |
You can see the sea from the bath, but from some rooms you can’t, so be careful!
Guest Room Details at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA
Check-in

Check-in is at "2waters," the restaurant & bar next to the villas where you’ll stay.

This is the check-in counter. It’s completely different from a city hotel check-in, so it may feel a little anticlimactic.
Check-in is limited to 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Since the style here is relaxing by the sea, it seems they don’t expect guests to check in at night!

Walk through “2waters” and you’ll find a pentagon-shaped infinity pool at the back!
It was a bit cloudy and the weather wasn’t great, but there are chairs, and you can have the Amami Oshima beach all to yourself.
Guest Room

This time I stayed in the Standard Villa.
Let’s go in right away ♪

The concrete is left exposed, but it’s a refined room.
At the back, the chair, which looks like it’s made from natural materials, is very stylish.

The bed is queen size, so two people can sleep without feeling cramped.
On the pillow end there’s a soft gray cushion engraved with the hotel name.

At check-in the shutters are closed to keep out the sunlight, but the ocean view the moment you open them is the best!

When you open the shutters!
The sea through the big windows!

There’s a desk and chair that can double as a study space.
There’s also free Wi-Fi, so it’s fine if you have a little work to do.
By the way, there is no TV.

Even though it’s a villa hotel, there’s a welcome sweet too.
It’s brown sugar karinto from Nagiya, made by a small team in Kasari-cho. It has a crisp yet soft taste, and once you eat one you’ll want another.

The hanger rack is wide and easy to use. It’s nice that there are also pants hangers with clips.

Of the three Denpaku properties, only Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA has loungewear, so it’s fine even if you forget your pajamas.

There are home appliances such as an electric kettle and an oven toaster, and they’re all Balmuda, matching throughout. So stylish!
There are also wine glasses, tumblers, mugs, and round plates.

The fridge holds water, assorted drinks, and alcohol (sparkling wine).

Wine and other bottled drinks in the wine cellar are extra, but you don’t have to waste time going to the supermarket, which wine lovers will appreciate.

When you stay in an open villa, it’s easy to forget about managing your valuables.
There’s a proper combination-lock safe, so you can relax.
Washbasin, Bathroom & Toilet

The washbasin, bath, toilet, and shower are all on the same floor, so it’s best suited for staying with someone you know fairly well.
Be careful if you’re with someone who is sensitive to the sound of flushing or to smells.

The washbasin is wide and spacious.
A full set of amenities is lined up, including a hand mirror, tissues, hand towels, a hair dryer, and toothbrushes.

The hand towels are printed with “Denpaku,” and each guest can use two.

Toothbrushes, body towels, lotion, and even a serum are provided.

The hair dryer is a Nobby, made by a brand that’s number one among salons.

A bath view that gives you privacy while still feeling open! What do you think of this resort feeling?

The toilet has no partition either and feels open, but it’s enclosed by concrete on three sides, so you do get a certain amount of privacy.
Let the other person know when you’re using it. Ha ha.

Outside are two deck chairs with just the right amount of springiness. Drinking beer or wine while looking at the sea is the best.
Reading a book while listening to the sound of the waves sounds great too~

Dinner at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA

The restaurant at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA is “2 waters,” the same place where you check in.
It’s a restaurant & bar facing the sea, with open windows as its signature feature.
Dinner is not included in the stay plan, so if you want to eat dinner at “2 waters,” be sure to reserve a seat in advance. It’s an à la carte menu style.
Perhaps for the sake of appearance, the food preparation seems to be done in the nearby Denpaku kitchen.

The à la carte menu offers plenty of ingredients that pair well with wine and cocktails.
The homemade ham is delicious.

Enjoying an appetizer of carrots and bamboo shoots while watching the sun set into the sea.

An assortment of nicely roasted vegetables. The seasoning on the eggplant was so perfect that I wanted a second helping.

Sashimi too, of course. I’m going to order plenty tonight!

The sun has set and it’s getting dark, but next comes Western-style white fish with vegetables.
It’s a dish the chef is particular about.

Finally, today’s pasta. It’s packed with meat, and the sauce coats it so well. Delicious!

After dinner I took a walk along the street where the villas are. Unfortunately the clouds spread out at night and the weather wasn’t great.
There’s a parking space for one car next to each villa, so it’s convenient to get around if you have a rental car.

Breakfast at Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA

Breakfast is at the same place as dinner, “2 waters.” It’s a breakfast service just for guests.
Breakfast is held in three seatings, at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30, so you can arrange it freely around your travel plans for the day.
The breakfast salad is set out on the counter table.
Eating a meal while looking at the sea from the morning is just too luxurious and elegant!

The main breakfast dish is “Island Vegetable Farci,” an assortment of vegetables.
The vegetables are fresh from a veteran organic farmer!

Enjoy the homemade natural-yeast bread with brown sugar caramel or seasonal fruit jam, as you like. The toast is unlimited refills.
The aging adds a distinctive depth of flavor, and it’s simply delicious!

After the meal, there’s a healthy seasonal fruit yogurt mousse. Denpaku’s original blend coffee comes with it too.
I wanted to dive into the blue sea spreading out right in front of me!
