Hello! I’m Joe (@chiropiyo0331).
This time I stayed at the South Wing of Yataro, a long-established ryokan founded in 1954 in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, where you can enjoy one of the World’s New Three Great Night Views (Nagasaki, Monaco, and Shanghai).
In this article, I’ll share my impressions and review of staying at Yataro’s South Wing.
The main building has been there since the ryokan first opened, while the South Wing is a relatively new building that was added later.
If you’re wondering what Yataro is like, or you’re looking for a place to stay around Nagasaki, this article is perfect for you, so please read to the end!
Who Should Stay at Yataro

There are more than 100 ryokan and hotels around Yataro in Nagasaki.
Even if you only look for a base near Nagasaki Station for sightseeing, there are so many options that it’s hard to decide where to stay, right?
I chose this ryokan for my Nagasaki sightseeing trip, and after actually staying here, these are the people I think Yataro suits best.
・You want to see Nagasaki’s ten-million-dollar night view, one of the World’s New Three Great Night Views
・You want to stay at a hotel with a shuttle from Nagasaki Station

First, people who want to see Nagasaki’s ten-million-dollar night view, one of the World’s New Three Great Night Views.
Nagasaki is famous for the ten-million-dollar night view that was chosen as one of the World’s New Three Great Night Views, and from Yataro‘s guest rooms you can look down over the whole city and enjoy the beautiful scenery also known as “Purple Nagasaki” and the “ten-million-dollar night view.”
You can enjoy the view to your heart’s content even from the lobby.

Second, people who want to stay at a hotel with a shuttle from Nagasaki Station.
You can get to Yataro without a car by taking the shuttle bus from the west exit of Nagasaki Station.
The best way to see Nagasaki’s sights efficiently is by streetcar and bus, so the location works very well with local transportation.
Access to Yataro
You can reach Yataro by local bus, the free shuttle bus, or car.
By local bus, take the bus bound for “Kazagashirayama” from the west exit of Nagasaki Station and get off at the last stop, about 20 minutes. You can also board inside Nagasaki Station on the Hotel New Nagasaki side, take the bus bound for “Kazagashira-machi Yataro,” and get off at the last stop, also about 20 minutes.
By car, it’s about 15 minutes from Nagasaki Station.
There are only three trips a day, but the shuttle bus that runs directly from the west exit of Nagasaki Station to the hotel is free, so I recommend timing your arrival to match it!

Yataro South Wing: Hotel Overview

Now let me introduce the details of the Yataro stay.

Yataro has two buildings, the main building and the South Wing. The main building is a three-story wooden building from the ryokan’s founding in 1954, while the South Wing is the former Yataro Inn Building 1, renovated in 1992 (Heisei 4). I stayed in the South Wing, the newer of the two.

Here’s the facility list and floor guide. The building has ten floors above ground and one basement floor, with the front desk on the 9th floor. Guest rooms are on floors 2 to 8, and the public bath is on the 2nd floor.
All floors are reachable by elevator.
Check-in

The Western-style interior is clean and puts you in a good mood!
The front desk is right on your left as you enter. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were polite.
Guest Room

After checking in, I headed straight to the room!
The corridor looks a little dated, but there was no noticeable dust or trash, and it was well cleaned.
The corridor is also wide, so passing other guests isn’t a problem.

I stayed in a Japanese-style room.
Because I checked in late after a day of sightseeing, the futons were already laid out.
With the futons spread out the room feels a bit cramped, but the rate is cheap, so I’d call that an acceptable compromise.

The table is set up the way it usually is in a Japanese-style ryokan, with teacups, a tea pot, water, a welcome sweet, and a guide to the facilities.

The TV is small, but these days you can watch YouTube and more on a PC or tablet, so it didn’t bother me much.

Even the room without a view actually comes with a veranda, so you can still enjoy the scenery and the night view!
You can see Mt. Inasa too.
Washbasin, Bathroom & Toilet

The washbasin, toilet, and bath are a unit bathroom, and unfortunately the space is quite small.
The shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are made by POLA, high-quality amenities that leave your skin and hair nicely moisturized.
A single bottle of POLA is expensive, but if you buy the commercial-use refill, it works out to only 550 yen per liter, so you can enjoy a hotel-like bath at home too!
Yataro South Wing’s Public Bath

Yataro has a public bath in both the main building and the South Wing; this is the South Wing’s “Kokaseki-no-Yu.”
The bath uses kokaseki stones, which warm you efficiently from the core of your body.

The bath is designed in white and feels more spacious than it looks, with an open, relaxing atmosphere.
The South Wing is well stocked with amenities such as a shampoo bar, lotion, and makeup remover.
Nagasaki’s Night View from Yataro South Wing

This photo was taken from the lobby, and the ten-million-dollar night view of Nagasaki’s illuminated city is a beautiful sight.
Because you can see it from inside the building, you don’t have to worry about temperature or weather at all, and this alone makes the stay worthwhile.
If you want to take your time enjoying it, one option is to join a World’s New Three Great Night Views tour that includes pick-up and drop-off at your hotel.
Dinner at Yataro South Wing

Dinner is at Restaurant Taro on the 10th floor of the South Wing.
The luxurious menu was a “Kaiseki Course with Dancing Grilled Abalone.”
The dishes are served one after another, so unfortunately I couldn’t take a photo of everything together.
The soft, luxurious abalone, liver and all, is just the best. There are also a few slices of sea bream sashimi per person.

The dishes are just as luxurious as the photos on the official site.
The “Dancing Grilled Abalone Kaiseki Course” is a year-round plan, though the ingredients do rotate, I was told.
| Course | Dish |
|---|---|
| Main (daimono) | Dancing grilled abalone |
| Appetizer | Fish marinated in nanban sauce |
| Sashimi | Thinly sliced sea bream with garnishes |
| Grilled dish | Foil-baked fish with lemon |
| Covered dish | Braised pork belly with mustard and steamed bun |
| Fried dish | Fried pufferfish with green chili |
| Vinegared dish | Seafood salad |
| Steamed dish | Chawanmushi (savory egg custard) |
| Rice | Steamed white rice |
| Pickles | Two kinds |
If you choose a plan with dinner, you need to reserve at least three days in advance so they can prepare the ingredients, so book ahead!

Breakfast at Yataro South Wing

Breakfast is also at Restaurant Taro, the same venue as dinner. The breakfast window is short, from 7:00 to 9:00.
Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet, and its specialty is that you can have a seafood rice bowl first thing in the morning.

From Western staples like bread, eggs, and sausages to Japanese classics like simmered hijiki, grilled fish, and kinpira gobo, and even Chinese shumai, the lineup is rich even in the morning, and you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like ♪

From the restaurant, too, you can look down over Nagasaki’s beautiful cityscape, making for a very satisfying breakfast.
