How to Choose a Hotel on Hawaii Island

How to choose a hotel on Hawaii Island

Hawaii Island is huge — driving all the way around it takes more than six hours. Unlike Oahu, you generally can’t walk to sightseeing spots, so location is the single biggest factor when picking a hotel here.

Before you choose where to stay, get clear on what you actually want out of the trip.

Do you want to laze on the beach right outside your hotel? Go all-in on sightseeing? Shop till you drop? Or cook together and hang out with a big group, home-style? The right area depends on what you’re after.

Of all the neighborhoods on Hawaii Island, Waikoloa checks several of these boxes at once, which is exactly why I recommend it.

  • Why Waikoloa is a great base — an insider take
  • Sightseeing spots near Waikoloa
  • Recommended hotels around Waikoloa

Where Is Waikoloa?

Drive about 30 minutes north from Kona International Airport and you’ll reach Waikoloa, one of Hawaii Island’s top resort areas.

It’s packed with large resort hotels and condominiums, plus golf courses and shopping malls.

There’s more to it than resorts, too — you can see ancient petroglyphs carved into the lava rock, and catch a gorgeous sunset at Anaeho’omalu Bay.

Anaeho’omalu was once sacred ground, off-limits to commoners under King Kamehameha.

Only members of the royal family were allowed to bathe at Anaeho’omalu Bay or feast on fish raised in the ancient fishponds there.

Why Stay Near Waikoloa: 3 Reasons

Here are three reasons I’d recommend basing yourself in the Waikoloa area.

1. Plenty of relaxing resort hotels

Waikoloa has the highest concentration of visitor-friendly resort hotels anywhere on Hawaii Island, which makes it a great pick for a first trip here.

Think of it as Hawaii Island’s answer to the Waikiki Beach area on Oahu — though the crowds and hotel selection obviously aren’t quite on the same scale.

Even if you’re a Hawaii Island regular, it’s a great choice if you want to spend your trip enjoying the hotel itself and its surroundings.

That said, it’s not built for wandering around on foot — getting to the famous sights means renting a car or booking a tour.

2. Excellent shopping

Shopping at Queens' MarketPlace near Waikoloa

Waikoloa has two shopping centers: Queens’ MarketPlace and Kings’ Shops.

Queens’ MarketPlace is the larger of the two, home to stores like Reyn’s and Sand People along with the Island Gourmet Markets (a joint venture between ABC Stores and KTA Super Stores) — you’ll find everything from fashion to home goods to groceries.

The second location of Daylight Mind Coffee, a Hawaii-grown coffee brand, is here too.

The food court covers a lot of ground — Mexican, Thai, American, a dedicated poke counter, and more.

Kings’ Shops has a wide mix of apparel boutiques, jewelry stores, restaurants, and galleries.

You’ll also find popular Hawaii Regional Cuisine spots here, including a branch of Roy’s, whose original location is in Waikiki.

Both centers also regularly host free events — hula and Hawaiian music shows, free ukulele lessons, even guided walks to see the petroglyphs carved into the nearby lava fields.

3. Great food, no car required

Poke bowl, a Hawaii Island specialty

Restaurants and food shops aimed at visitors are scattered all over Hawaii Island, but because the island is so large, getting to them — for sightseeing or just dinner — usually means driving. A lot of travelers aren’t thrilled about driving in Hawaii.

Waikoloa is the exception. Between the restaurants and food courts inside the shopping centers above and the prepared foods and bento at the local supermarket, you’ve got plenty of options within walking distance — no car needed.

8 Recommended Hotels Around Waikoloa

Here are eight hotels I’d recommend around Waikoloa.

Pick the one that matches what you’re after.

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Marriott is a global hotel brand with more than 2,000 properties worldwide, and this is one of Hawaii Island’s must-consider upscale resorts — modern construction that still carries a real sense of Hawaiian tradition and formality.

Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace, both packed with restaurants and stores, are an easy walk away, which makes this hotel convenient for dining and shopping alike.

There’s also a golf course on the property.

The closest beach is Anaeho’omalu Bay, known for its white sand and beautiful sunsets.

Along the path to Anaeho’omalu Bay, you’ll pass several petroglyph sites.

Hilton Waikoloa Village

Hilton Waikoloa Village

An enormous resort — more than 250,000 sqm of grounds and 1,241 rooms — rising along Waiulua Bay inside the Waikoloa Beach Resort.

The property is split across three towers (Ocean, Palace, and Lagoon), and getting between the lobbies means riding the tram (monorail) or a boat.

It’s not just big — it’s practically a wildlife park, with a lagoon beach and resident dolphins, colorful fish, and flamingos. The Dolphin Quest program, where guests can interact with the dolphins, is popular with kids and adults alike.

Both the Ocean Tower and Lagoon Tower have their own pools, and the Ocean Tower pool adds a waterfall and water slide — great news for families with kids.

And don’t forget the food. For breakfast, there’s Big Island Breakfast at Water’s Edge, with a broad Japanese-Western-Chinese spread; for a poolside lunch at the Ocean Tower, Orchid MarketPlace is a cafe known for its fresh-baked pizza.

For a special dinner with someone you love while you watch the sunset, Kamuela Provision Company — a mostly-seafood restaurant — is the pick.

You could easily spend your entire Hawaii Island vacation without ever leaving the property.

The interiors have a polished tropical feel, furnished with a cohesive, beige-toned palette for a calm, comfortable atmosphere.

Rooms come with a full kitchen — microwave, rice cooker, toaster, dishware, all of it — and Queens’ MarketPlace supermarket is within walking distance, which makes day-to-day life easy.

These villa-style units are built for long stays, with an ocean-view lanai, kitchen, living room, and dining area — plenty of space all around.

(A lanai is a covered outdoor space with a table and chairs — perfect for enjoying a drink in the sea breeze.)

Inside the Waikoloa Beach Resort, you’re also close to Anaeho’omalu Bay for beach activities, a golf course, and Kings’ Shops.

Lava Lava Beach Club

A set of upscale cottages near the parking lot for Anaeho’omalu Beach. The oceanfront cottages are extremely popular, and the restaurant gets so busy that walk-ins rarely get a table.

Each cottage has a bedroom, a private terrace, and an outdoor shower. With ocean views right from the terrace, it’s a favorite for honeymooners and couples.

Aston Shores at Waikoloa

Aston Shores at Waikoloa

A condominium run by Aston, which operates condos and hotels across the Hawaiian Islands.

Access is restricted to guests and their parties, so security is tight — pass through the security gate and an orange-and-white, three-story building comes into view.

Choose from 1–2 bedroom suites or 2-bedroom villas, and every unit comes with a full kitchen and an in-room washer/dryer.

On top of a pool and a jet spa, there’s also a tennis court, a fitness center, and a BBQ area.

The grounds, surrounded by lava fields, feel well-kept, with mature, established landscaping.

Aston Waikoloa Colony Villas

Another Aston-run condominium, with villas lining the beach course of the Waikoloa Golf Club.

You won’t get ocean or beach views here, but golfers will appreciate the fairway views instead.

There are no supermarkets or restaurants within walking distance, so a rental car is essentially required. If you’re already planning to rent a car at the airport, this is a solid option.
