With that many choices, it’s only natural to struggle with picking where to stay for a business trip or sightseeing visit to Tokyo.
In particular, nearby options like “Dormy Inn Korakuen” and even higher-end hotels in central Tokyo make many travelers wonder, “What’s the deciding factor for choosing Ikebukuro?”
This time, I chose this hotel specifically for some sauna time (“sa-katsu”) in central Tokyo, and after actually staying here, I found that Dormy Inn Ikebukuro is a great fit for the following types of travelers.

A proper high-temperature sauna, a well-chilled cold plunge, and an outdoor air-cooling space where you can actually feel the breeze — having a full “totonou” setup like this is the biggest reason this hotel stands out in the Ikebukuro area!
Second: anyone who wants to dig into a full Chinese-style breakfast from the morning.
Dormy Inn’s signature is its “regional breakfast,” and Ikebukuro’s concept is none other than “machi-chuka” (neighborhood Chinese food) 🥟 Freshly cooked pan-fried gyoza, fried rice, shumai, and other hearty dishes line the buffet! There’s no seafood rice bowl like at some other branches, but the Ikebukuro-only lineup is a real highlight!

The hotel is about a 9-minute walk from the east exit of Ikebukuro Station.
Sunshine City and the anime/manga hotspot “Otome Road” are just a short walk away, making this an unbeatable base for fans of otaku culture. It’s perfect if you’d rather spend a little less on lodging and put more toward shopping and events in Ikebukuro.

If you want to soak in a rare black hot spring and eat a hearty breakfast of gyoza and fried rice from the morning, Dormy Inn Ikebukuro — the one I’m covering today — is the way to go. But if having the biggest bath and being right by the station matters most to you, Dormy Inn Korakuen is worth considering too!!
Access to Dormy Inn Ikebukuro
Dormy Inn Ikebukuro is located about a 9-minute walk from the east exit of JR Ikebukuro Station, and is run by Kyoritsu Maintenance — a rare find in central Tokyo with its own natural “kuro-yu” black hot spring and sauna.
There are several convenience stores near the hotel (including Seven-Eleven and FamilyMart), and Sunshine City along with a lively strip of restaurants is within walking distance, so you’ll never be short of options for dinner or a quick errand!
Parking is first-come, first-served (with a height restriction) at ¥3,000 per night; if the lot is full or your vehicle doesn’t fit, you’ll need to use a nearby pay-and-display lot instead. Nearby parking gets very crowded on weekends and during events, so using public transportation is recommended whenever possible.
Current Room Plans & Rates
For this stay, I booked the “[‘Kuro-yu’ Natural Hot Spring × Sauna for the Ultimate Totonou!] Dormy Inn Standard Plan (Breakfast Included)” through Rakuten Travel.
The rate came to ¥17,000 per person on a weekday, breakfast included.
Given the central Tokyo location, the pricing felt a bit on the higher side even on weekdays.
On weekends and the night before public holidays especially, rates topping ¥40,000 per night aren’t unusual. That premium pricing reflects the hotel’s status in one of Tokyo’s most popular areas, backed up by a genuinely well-equipped facility.

From Ikebukuro Station, it’s a short walk to the hotel 🚶💨
Coming out of the east exit ticket gates at Ikebukuro Station and heading toward Sunshine City 🏢, I walked through the lively Sunshine-dori shopping street, passed under the elevated Shuto Expressway, and after a little further, spotted the hotel entrance on my right 🚪
A Sleek, Chic Lobby and a Smooth Check-In Process
The front desk is right on the right as you enter the hotel. The counter is spacious, and the staff handled everything very smoothly.
There was no crowding, and I wasn’t kept waiting at all 🙌
This time payment was handled up front, so I paid quickly by credit card.
After a quick rundown of the large bath, breakfast, and the much-anticipated “yonaki soba” (late-night ramen) service, it was finally time to check in! 🔑
In one corner of the lobby, there’s a welcome drink corner that guests are free to use anytime. ☕️
Having freshly brewed coffee for free is such a nice touch when you want to catch your breath after arriving — a real treat whether you’re here on business or worn out from exploring Ikebukuro 🙌
As is now standard at many Dormy Inn locations, there’s also an amenity bar set up right here 🪥
Room Check at Dormy Inn Ikebukuro | A Functional, Calming Private Space
The elevator hall is a calm space with potted plants — a nice touch you don’t often see at Dormy Inn!
The elevator requires you to tap your key card before you can even press the button for your floor, which felt very reassuring from a security standpoint 🔐
The guest room doors are dark brown, and the whole floor is unified in calm, muted tones — it feels sleek and chic, well beyond your typical business hotel!

Stepping inside, the layout has that signature Dormy Inn efficiency — no wasted space, purely functional.
My room this time was a double. The spacious bed uses a Serta mattress, with a comfortable firmness that felt like it would let me sleep soundly until morning 😴💤

The main bed, positioned toward the back of the room, is spacious — a genuinely luxurious size if you’re traveling solo ✨
Near the headboard, all the light switches are conveniently grouped together, and there’s also an outlet for charging your phone right within reach. Having everything you need right by the pillow is such a nice touch 📱🔋

Both a USB port and a power outlet are included! 🔌✨
Being able to charge your phone, plus a tablet or camera battery, all from the same spot by the pillow at the same time is genuinely convenient!
The desk area is laid out compactly and efficiently!
The TV is positioned off to the left, which leaves a nice wide workspace on the right 💻✨
The chair is a solid wooden one with a proper backrest, so you can settle in and get real work done.
The TV built into the desk isn’t just for watching programs — you can also check real-time crowding at the large bath and seating availability at the breakfast venue!
Below the TV is a PIN-code safety box. 🔐
Operation is very simple — there’s a clear instruction sheet on the left side of the door, so even first-time users can set it without any confusion 👍
Being able to quickly stash your wallet or other valuables when heading to the large bath or stepping out briefly gives real peace of mind!
Inside the shelving, a bath towel and face towel are neatly set together in their own dedicated basket.
Since the large bath itself doesn’t provide towels, bringing this basket along from your room is standard practice.
Having everything you need already gathered together means you can just grab it and head straight to the large bath — genuinely convenient!
Opening the door beneath the sink reveals a compact mini-fridge.
Taking a peek inside, I found complimentary mineral water waiting!
It’s an essential for rehydrating after a sauna session, so having it ready in the room is genuinely appreciated 🙏
There’s one more nice touch that’s uniquely Dormy Inn — depending on the season, chilled welcome sweets (like fruit jelly) are sometimes on offer! 🍊✨
Right beside the entrance of the room, there’s an open-style hanger rack.
Here you’ll find the familiar Dormy Inn separates-style loungewear. It’s soft to the touch and doesn’t feel restrictive, so the biggest perk is being able to wear it not just in the room, but straight to the large bath and restaurant too! 🙌
There’s also a fabric deodorizing spray on hand, which is a thoughtful touch for quickly freshening up your coat or clothes after enjoying a meal at one of Ikebukuro’s great restaurants 🌿
I pretty much always change straight into the loungewear as soon as I get to the room and switch into full relaxation mode!
In this loungewear and the room slippers, you can access every facility in the hotel — the large bath, the breakfast venue (Restaurant Hatago), the lobby, all of it!
How Clean Are the Sink and Toilet? A Closer Look
In the hallway area of the room, there’s a handy standalone sink.
The water area is compact overall, but the mirror is large and the lighting bright, making it ideal for doing your makeup or checking your appearance 💄
Across from the sink is a separate, enclosed toilet room.
It’s a clean, white-toned space, complete with a warm-water washlet, of course.
※ Note: the double room I stayed in this time did not have a shower or unit bath.
Ikebukuro’s Only Natural Hot Spring, “Hōjō-no-Yu” | Totonou in the Top-Floor Open-Air Bath
Taking the elevator up to the top floor, the 15th floor, you’ll find the entrance to the “Natural Hot Spring Hōjō-no-Yu.”
The wood-grain, Japanese-modern lattice-patterned walls create an atmosphere that makes you forget the bustle of the city.
Glancing down at my feet near the entrance of the large bath… there, sitting quietly, was an adorable little owl statue — the symbol of Ikebukuro! 🦉💕
Be sure to keep an eye out for this charming owl on your way to the large bath! 🙌
The natural “kuro-yu” black hot spring, a rarity in central Tokyo, has a silky, slightly viscous texture that leaves skin feeling smooth — a true beautifying bath ✨
The open-air bath on the top 15th floor offers a surprisingly open, airy feel that hardly seems possible right in the middle of the city 🌿
Natural light streaming in through the skylight reflects beautifully off the surface of the water ✨
Beneath the Ikebukuro sky, forgetting all about the city’s hustle and bustle, it was a truly blissful, hideaway-like bathing experience 😊
A Proper High-Temperature Sauna and an Ice-Cold Plunge Pool (My Sauna Experience)
The sauna room is a proper high-temperature sauna with a pleasant scent of wood drifting through it 🔥
Sauna specs: roughly 100°C / seats 10 / two tiers / convection-style stove + electric heater / TV included!
The room is spacious and clean, and you can really settle in and sweat it out while watching TV ✨
One small downside — the benches aren’t very deep, so it was a bit hard to sit cross-legged…
An “Totonou” Moment with an Ice-Cold Plunge and Outdoor Air Bathing
The cold plunge sits at around 15–16°C and has a crisp, invigorating bite that instantly tightens the body after the sauna.
The view from the open-air space is fantastic, so I relaxed in the totonou chair with a footrest for some outdoor air bathing. Some guests even enjoy their outdoor air time while watching the sunrise.
One surprise: a free “Akuri” drink dispenser set up in the changing room! 🥤✨
Free-flowing refills of a drink familiar to sauna enthusiasts everywhere — a mix of Aquarius and Real Gold — is a genuinely surprising service.
You won’t find this at other locations, so it’s a real treat!!

The post-bath relaxation area has a well-stocked manga corner lined with everything from trending titles to classics 📚✨ And since this is Ikebukuro, of course there’s an anime song medley playing in the background ♪

As at every Dormy Inn, there’s an ice machine available too! Larger paper cups are provided, which comes in handy in all kinds of ways!

The fridge in the post-bath area is lined with ice-cold bottles, making for a genuinely indulgent start to the morning ☀️✨
A Dormy Inn Classic! The Late-Night “Yonaki Soba” Snack
And no night at a Dormy Inn is complete without the signature late-night “yonaki soba” (literally “night-crying noodles”) 🍜!
It’s served free of charge at the restaurant “Hatago” between 9:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. A light, soy-sauce-based warm ramen, it’s the perfect late-night snack that gently soaks into your body after a bath 😊
This free half-size soy-sauce ramen is a welcome way to cap off a night out in Ikebukuro, or to satisfy a late-night craving. The light broth carries a fragrant hint of rock seaweed — simple, but it really hits the spot 😊

The highlight of the morning at Dormy Inn Ikebukuro is the lavish breakfast buffet at the restaurant “Hatago” 🍴✨
The board at the entrance is packed with an enticing lineup of dishes themed around Ikebukuro’s signature “machi-chuka” (neighborhood Chinese food)!
From the signature “Asari Shio Soba” (clam-based salt ramen) to authentic dim sum and Chinese dishes, there’s a spread designed to energize you from the morning.
A crisp “onion salad” and a vibrant, colorful “green salad” are a nice touch, letting you load up on vegetables.
The salad corner also includes classic side dishes like potato salad 🥗✨
The creamy, reliably good potato salad is a must-have breakfast staple.
Now let’s take a look at the star of the show — the “machi-chuka” menu 🥟✨
Kept warm on heated trays: umami-packed qingjiao rousi (stir-fried pork with green peppers) and mapo tofu with just the right amount of thick, appetizing sauce. Both taste genuinely authentic — and both make the rice disappear fast, even in the morning!!

The gyoza are crispy outside, juicy inside, and lined up neatly, sending up an aroma that’s impossible to resist. Bite-sized and easy to eat, pair them with the mapo tofu and qingjiao rousi and you’ve got a genuinely authentic Chinese set meal for breakfast 😊

On top of that, there’s a dazzling variety to choose from — melt-in-your-mouth simmered pork belly and seasoned egg, richly marbled grilled salmon, a fresh salad, onsen tamago (soft-boiled egg), and a small dish of firefly squid, among others!
